tomb Raider, the 2013 reboot, had to be quite different from what turned out in the final form, since in the projects it had to be called Tomb Raider: Ascension and be practically almost a horror, with a structure and atmospheres that are decidedly different from those built by Crystal Dynamics.
Let’s find out these details through an interesting video that Square Enix published on YouTube on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the series, which stages a prototype of this Tomb Raider: Ascension. Fans of the series probably already knew that the first prototypes of the 2013 chapter were decidedly different from the style undertaken later, but this is in fact the first official video dedicated to that initial project.
Tomb Raider: Ascension was to deviate significantly from style typical of the series, proposing elements also taken from survival horror such as Resident Evil and something similar to Shadow of the Colossus, considering the section visible in the video with Lara Croft on horseback, chased by a gigantic creature.
In short, something definitely different from what then came to form with the 2013 reboot, which however represented a significant departure from the more classic tradition of Tomb Raider but still maintaining some aspects of characterization, atmospheres and gameplay elements. The disturbing tones remained in the final version of the 2013 Tomb Raider as well, especially in some phases of the game, but certainly we are quite far from those seen in some sections of Ascension.
In particular, the enemies visible in the prototype are real monsters that could easily be found within a survival horror, something very different from the threats seen in Tomb Raider, except for some supernatural digressions visible especially towards the end. Some of these features may have been later taken up in the subsequent Rise of the Tomb Raider, given the presence of some “horror” themes in the game, between the expansion on Baba Yaga and the one on Croft Manor with “Lara’s Nightmare”.
