Tokyo 2020 Olympics, fifth gold for Italy: triumph in sailing Nacra 17
Fifth gold for Italy at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics: to win it is the couple formed by Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti, who prevailed in the Nacra 17 category of sailing.
Italy thus breaks a fast in sailing that had lasted for 13 years, or from the bronze of Diego Romero in the Laser obtained at the Beijing 2008 Games.
The last time that Italy had won the gold medal in sailing, however, dates back to 2000 with the victory of Alessandra Sensini in the sailing table at the Sydney Olympics. This is the fourth gold won by Italy in this discipline after that of Leone Reggio in 1936 and Strulino-Rode in 1952.
Ruggero Tita, 29 years old from Trentino, and Caterina Banti, 34, from Rome, were already sure of silver, but in the final race they kept their opponents at bay, the British John Gimson and Anna Burnet, the only ones who could undermine them for the final victory , and concluded the competition in sixth place: a placement that earned him the triumph and the conquest of the gold medal.
