Japan will extend until August 22, thus covering the period of the Tokyo Olympics, the state of emergency imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The official announcement by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is expected in the next few hours.
The decision, which could reduce or completely ban the presence of spectators at the Games starting on 23 July, follows the continuous increase in infections in Japan. Yesterday 920 cases were confirmed against 714 a week ago. This is the highest number of infections since May, when the thousand cases were exceeded.
Meanwhile, the president of the IOC, the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach has arrived in Japan. Bach greeted reporters upon his arrival at the hotel where he will have to observe a three-day quarantine.
