January begins with a holiday on its first day: it is the Universal Fellowship Day, a date established to preach unity and harmony among nations, in the spirit of renewal and hope that the arrival of a new year brings. On this day, in 2022, the 80th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Declaration, a document ratified by 26 countries, which paved the way for the creation of the United Nations (UN), will be celebrated.
In the first days of January, Catholics celebrate Epiphany: the date refers, according to the tradition of religion, to the visit of three wise men to the baby Jesus, born in Bethlehem. It is when the Christmas tree is dismantled and the decorations, saved. Cross country, several places make the Folia de Reis – also called Reisado or Festa de Santos Reis. In Rio de Janeiro, the 23rd is a municipal holiday, due to the day of São Sebastião, patron saint of the city.
On January 9th, it will be 200 years since the Day of Fico – the date on which the then Prince Regent of Brazil, Dom Pedro de Alcântara, contravened Portuguese orders to return to Lisbon and remained in Brazil, in an episode that marked the beginning of a process that would end with the independence of Brazil.
The month of January also brings birthday and death dates for big names in music, sports and science. The list includes writer and philosopher Umberto Eco (he would be 90 on January 5th), singer David Bowie (he would turn 75 on January 8th), physicist Stephen Hawking (also born on January 8th and would turn 80), the politician Leonel Brizola (he would be 100 years old on January 22nd), the empress consort of the Brazilian Empire, Maria Leopoldina (225 years old on January 22nd), the politician Jânio Quadros (he would be 105 years old), the musician Tom Jobim (he would be 95 years old years), and former soccer players Eusébio (who would have turned 80) and Tostão (turned 75) – all born on January 25th. Among the personalities who left in January, singers Elis Regina (who died 40 years ago, on January 19th) and Maysa (who died 45 years ago, on January 22nd).
January also brings days focused on access to education and culture, such as Public Domain Day (January 1st) and World Braille Day (January 4th), and the protection of rights and populations, such as Freedom of Worship Day (7th), Combating Religious Intolerance (21st), the International Day in Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust (27th) and the National Day to Combat Slave Labor (28th). Professions such as photographer (January 8th), astronaut (January 9th), traditional midwife (January 20th), postman (January 25th) and magician (January 31st) are celebrated this month.
