TJ Watt is the new beast of the NFL, and he threatens to continue hunting quarterbacks’ heads.
The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker surpassed the 100 sack barrier this weekend, and he did so in 109 regular season games, the second fastest to reach that barrier, only surpassed by Reggie White, who did so in 96 duels.
Watt surpassed DeMarcus Ware, who surpassed that 100-sack barrier in 113 regular-season games. In modern times, from 1982 to date, Watt currently ranks 39th for most career quarterback sacks.
And on the list of active players, Watt is number seven on the list, currently only surpassed by Khlalil Mack (104.0), Calais Campbell (107.5), Justin Houston and Chandler Jones (112.0), Cameron Jordan (11.7.5) and Von Miller (126.5).
In just his eighth season in the League, Watt already has his clients, since the Browns (17.0), Ravens (16.0) and Bengals (12.0) are the rivals he has captured the most times.
Reggie White
He played 14 seasons in a row, retired in 1999 and returned in 2000 to play one last season.
He finished with 198 sacks in 232 regular season games wearing the jersey of the Eagles, Packers and Panthers. On average, he added 13.2 quarterback sacks in 15 seasons, a figure lower than TJ Watt’s current average (13.7 per year in eight seasons). Now, Reginald Howard’s best years were at the beginning of his career, adding 21 sacks in his third season and 18 in his second and fourth. Reggie is considered one of the best defenders and is the second best on the all-time list in quarterback sacks, with 198. The number one is Bruce Smith, who finished with 200 sacks, but he did it in more years , since he played from 1985 to 2003 in the NFL.
TJ Watt
That’s 101 quarterback sacks and counting.
TJ Watt is a threat on the field, he is the terror of quarterbacks, and if he stays healthy for more seasons he could hope to reach the 200 barrier. Trent Jordan has averaged, not counting the five games this season, a total of 13.7 captures per campaign -he has four and a half-. Watt is only in his eighth season in the League, and injuries haven’t really hit him hard. He has missed few duels. He only struggled in 2022 when he barely played 10 of the 17 games, as he suffered a pectoral injury, and at the beginning of 2024 he suffered a grade 2 sprain of the internal lateral ligament in his left knee. From the outset, one of the objectives for Watt, in this campaign, will be to surpass what was done by his brother JJ, who retired in 2022 with 114.5 sacks in 151 duels.
