The best of the rest
In 2023 Brad Binder he was the best in the championship among the riders who did not have a Ducati at their disposal. The South African talent from KTM finished at fourth place in his fourth season in the premier class, collecting five podium finishes and two successes in the Sprints. However, what was missing was the sharpness in the Sunday races which left him for the second consecutive year without the possibility of climbing to the top step of the podium.
The logical step forward for the 28 year old from Potchefstroom in the new season now upon us would be to win some races and – possibly – enter the fight between Ducati to win the championship. Inside the Austrian company, however, there is the belief that Binder needs a step to play for the final success with the various Bagnaia, Martin and Marquez: the consistency of performance. In fact, quite a few points were wasted last year in avoidable falls.
Fewer errors, more consistency
Binder often was criticized by his opponents for one driving style too impetuous: “With him we missed the victory, sometimes due to a few details, but he demonstrated that he can stay in the leading group – declared KTM team manager Francesco Guidotti to the official MotoGP website – but I think now he's got used to being there and has also learned more about the behavior of the riders in the leading group“. The next step to take will be to avoid 'costly' errors in terms of points.
“It is not necessary to be the fastest in every race – has Guidotti explained again – but be the best at the end of the season. Sometimes you have to be conservative, while still being fast enough to get into the top-3 or top-5. Winning is important, because we are there to win, but in the end it is the consistency of results that pays off at the end of the season. Last year he (Binder) he was not third at the end of the season due to some crashes in competition. In 2022 he crashed only once and if we see the points from the Sunday races alone he scored more points in 2022 than in 2023. We must pay attention to this“, he concluded.
