Elderly parents may want to live independently in their homes. However, as they get older, they may need your assistance, especially if they get sick. Caring for older people can be challenging, especially if you have work and a family to care for. However, you can lend a helping hand without making it too taxing. Here are tips on how to do that.

Determine how much care they need

Knowing what assistance they need helps you prepare better for the role and plan the best way to care for them. Some elderly may have difficulties getting out of bed and moving on their own, while others could still do many things themselves but need assistance with some tasks like grocery shopping, doctor’s visits, and laundry. The more they depend on you, the more time you need to spend with them. So, you may consider moving into their house or them moving into your home if they need complete care.

Talk to their doctors to understand their health condition

If your parents have health problems, talk to their doctors to understand their condition. It’s to ensure that they get the proper medication on time. You may also need to perform other tasks like giving injections daily. You should learn the correct way to do it for the benefit of your parents. Moreover, the doctors can provide information on what things will be good for your elders and what they need to avoid.

Ensure the home is accessible

Older adults may have difficulties moving around, so making changes at home is essential to make it more accessible. An example of this is installing handrails around the house for support. You may also consider getting a shower cabin from a shower units UK supplier. Choose one with a base that is not too high to ensure safety and convenience. It’s safer than a tub, as getting in would not be too difficult. Moreover, it prevents slipping as it retains water inside the cabin. Some units have additional features like water jets and steam that will make them feel better.

Get help from other family members

Caring for the elderly can be taxing, and you would feel burnout in the long run if you shoulder everything. So if you have siblings or close relatives, ask for their help so that you can take turns.

Hire respite care service

Hiring a respite care service is an option if no family member can share the role with you. They can help with specific tasks or cover the days you are away. For example, you may hire them if you need to travel over the weekend or need someone to drive your parents to the doctor.

Consider other living options

As mentioned, you may consider asking your parents to move into your house if they need total care. Make your home accessible, like installing a shower cabin that is safe for them. Look for shower units for sale with accessibility features like handles and anti-slip trays. Assisted living and nursing homes are other options.

Take care of your health too because you cannot look after your elderly parents properly if you get sick.
