Times have changed and there are many who prefer to search for their better half through this type of application
There are many dating apps on the market. Times have changed and there are many who prefer to search for their better half through this type of application. The biggest advantage of these dating tools is that you can find any type of compatible person with you. Dating applications are very easy to use, but it is very important to take care of security when you decide to meet a person through this means.
The Director of Research and Awareness of ESET Spain, Josep Albors, assures that “dating applications have an important role in society and were a great company during the pandemic. Half of Tinder users are Gen Z, but dating is very different from previous generations. They spend more time online and on dating platforms before meeting in person.
Apps of this type use personal data and lax privacy settings, which can help scammers. Cybersecurity company ESET has listed some of the settings that can improve the security of one of the most used dating apps today, Tinder.
How to improve security if you use Tinder
1. Tinder requires an email address and phone number to sign up. This makes it more difficult for scammers to create multiple fake accounts and bot profiles.
2. Check your profile. Blue ticks are earned after sending a selfie video to Tinder. The app’s AI will compare it to your profile photos and confirm your identity. Keep in mind that your home photo is biometric data and you need to make sure that the data is indeed deleted as the app claims.
3. Manage your visibility. Turn off the ‘show on Tinder’ option if you want to take a break; only profiles that have previously swiped right will still be able to see you, depending on the app. A Tinder Plus feature will let you show yourself only to people you’ve swiped right on.
4. Feel free to block unwanted contacts. You can prevent people you know from being shown to you by entering their email address or phone number in the ‘Block Contacts’ menu. If they used that contact information when creating their Tinder profile, your profile will not be shown to them.
5. Use the Security Center. There is a lot to read about how to be safe online and in real life, how to report a scam, and even the possibility of taking a test with the basic security protocol of the application.
