The 10 worst tourist traps in the world
To help keen travelers understand which attractions might be best avoided, Online language course platform Preply has revealed the most stressful tourist traps around the world. The research analyzed reviews of the most popular tourist destinations around the world, counting how many reviews used negative words such as “overrated”, “tourist trap” and “disappointing”.
Times Square in New York is considered the most stressful tourist trap in the world, with as many as 1,761 reviews labeling it “overrated”, “disappointing” or a “tourist trap”. Reviews often say it’s too crowded, dirty and even boring. Its legendary fame attracts around 330,000 people a day, which can make it a stressful and overcrowded experience.
One tourist, Aaron B., expressed his frustration in his Google review by stating that Times Square is “too crowded, impossible to move around. Too stressful to enjoy,” while another visitor wrote, “High hopes and expectations and big disappointment. Times Square for us was crowded, dirty and overrated.”
Continued Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. While most visitors agree on the historical importance of this site, 1,425 of the reviews we analyzed indicate that people weren’t impressed with the attraction itself. The main complaints are that it is small and disappointing, as well as being overcrowded.
A local guide, Juergen G., wrote a review on Google saying: “It is disappointing how an internationally recognized historical landmark can be turned into nothing more than a tourist trap.”
In third place is the Eiffel Tower in Paris, with 1,291 reviews complaining that it’s an overrated tourist trap. Followed by The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen (1,248), Las Ramblas in Barcelona (1,203) and Manneken Pis in Brussels (1,154). The Swiss lake Caumasee is the most relaxing tourist destination in the world.
