What a show between Nasr and Blomqvist
The 62nd edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona – a very classic which 'opens' the motorsport season together with the Monte Carlo Rally – did not disappoint expectations, providing a great spectacle. Ferrari won the GTD-Pro class, while Porsche won the overall classification by imposing itself in the premier class, the GTP.
This is the first for the German company overall victory among the prototypes in a 24 hour race since the days of the 919 Lmp1, prevailing over a Cadillac that was never tamed until the final stages. In fact, just over an hour from the checkered flag, Tom Blomqvist made a thrilling overtaking move which earned him the lead of the race from the Brazilian Felipe Nasr.
The English driver at the wheel of the Cadillac followed in the wake of the Porsche 963 along the entire causeway that leads to the arrival 'curvilinear', taking the outside line. Nasr defended himself on the inside and the pair had to dribble the Ferrari 296 number #23 entered in the GTD class of Triarsi Competizioni. The latter took on the role of Ricardo Zonta in the famous overtaking by Mika Hakkinen against Michael Schumacher in the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix won by the Finnish driver from McLaren. On that occasion, on the Kemmel straight leading to the E Les Combes braking section, Schumacher had Hakkinen in his wake and had to move to the outside to overtake the lapped Zonta, Hakkinen instead took the inside despite the little space and thus found himself with the favor of the trajectory at the moment of braking.
There feat on the outside of Tom Blomqvist yesterday wasn't enough for Cadillac to take the victory. The arrival of the Safety Car with less than an hour to go shuffled the cards and Porsche regained the lead thanks to a faster pit stop. Blomqvist followed Nasr even in the last half hour, but the Brazilian maintained the lead.
