Three men arrested in Zaragoza for an alleged group rape of a homeless woman

The National Police confirmed this Tuesday the arrest of three men accused of the group rape of a homeless woman, in the middle of last September in the storage room of an apartment block in Zaragoza. The victim was a regular user of the municipal shelter in the Aragonese capital, where, as she reported in her complaint, she regularly suffered harassment from several young people with whom she usually met at the facilities.

The Minister of Social Policies and Equality delegate of the Zaragoza City Council, Marian Orós, told the media in a press conference to offer data on sexist violence that at no time did the woman bring these facts to the attention of the social workers of the installation and in no case did she comment that she did not feel comfortable. Likewise, Orós explained that the event would have occurred outside the shelter facilities.

After leaving this facility due to the pressure she suffered, the woman explained that the night the rape occurred she had been drinking beer in several bars in the city, but she told investigators that she did not remember how she had gotten to the storage room. where the reported events took place.

Apparently, according to publication Herald of Aragonthe woman sent several WhatsApp messages to an acquaintance of hers to tell her the events, after waking up half-naked in the storage room, and was finally located by members of the Zaragoza Local Police unconscious in a warehouse frequented by passers-by without resources.

Information about the aggressors

In the ambulance in which she was taken to the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, the victim gave identifying information about her attackers and, a few weeks later, she managed to identify one of them in the municipal shelter facilities.

The arrest of the first suspect led the agents of the Family and Women Unit of the National Police Force of Zaragoza to the subsequent arrest of the rest of the members of the group responsible for the harassment and rape suffered by the woman.

Oros has rejected the attack and, as the ultimate person in charge of the municipal shelter, has explained that on the day of the events the workers tried to convince her not to leave the building, but she did not agree. “There is freedom of movement” and she is of legal age, the counselor recalled.

The city council’s social services accompanied the woman in the process of filing the complaint, once she was discharged from the hospital and returned to the shelter, he added.
