The fire on the Brocken is still being fought. Rain has eased the situation somewhat. But the fire still needs to be extinguished. The weather is currently too bad for firefighting aircraft.
Wernigerode – After overnight rain on the Brocken, there are currently three fire sites. “The emergency services are now going in there,” said the head of the crisis team, Immo Kramer, to the German Press Agency after a briefing. There are also two other suspected areas. These are to be examined more closely with the help of drones with thermal imaging cameras. The area there is difficult to access, said Kramer.
Firefighting aircraft could be deployed again at the fire sites during the course of the day. However, the weather is currently too hazy and visibility is poor, said Kramer. “The weather will be good for flying in the afternoon.” The helicopters that were also deployed over the weekend have since been cancelled.
Rain for several hours
In the morning, emergency services had examined the area to get an overview of the forest fire situation. It had rained steadily for several hours, said Kramer. The remaining work would now take more time and manpower, said Kramer. “We cannot yet declare ‘fire out’.”
The fire broke out on Friday on the Königsberg, a side peak of the Brocken, and spread over a length of around 1,000 meters. The fire was fought from the air and on the ground over the entire weekend. On Saturday evening, the emergency services finally managed to prevent the fire from spreading further. The area is currently closed to tourists. dpa
