Leonardo Valdez Zurita, former executive director of the Electoral Organization of the IFE and current academic, pointed out in an interview for EL DEBATE that what is intended is that, far from the noise of the bellscitizens have a period of reflection in which they can evaluate all the information they obtained and prepare to make their voting decision.

He explained that this period that is established in legal terms also has empirical support. He detailed that about 25 percent of citizens who respond to exit polls say they made their voting decision during this period.

Voting intention

For Mónica Montaño Reyes, an expert in political science, the offer that the candidates give also has a lot of influence on whether people are encouraged to go out and vote after the closed period.

They are for two reasons: the first, competitiveness. The closer an election is, the more likely they are to go out and vote. And second, the more the environment is proactive and less violent, the more likely it is that more people will turn out to vote, he noted.

However, the coordinator of the Electoral Observatory of the University of Guadalajara highlighted that unfortunately, the current campaigns have been the most violent between candidates, both at the national and local level.
