A bear had already been spotted in the region in June, and now three cyclists have reported another encounter with the animal near the German border.
Langkampfen – Very few people would wish for an encounter with a bear, but that is exactly what happened to three cyclists in Austria. They claim to have seen a bear on a forest path near the German border on Saturday. However, no one was injured in the encounter.
As the state of Tyrol reports, the animal stayed on the “Bärenbad” forest path near Langkampfen in the Tyrolean district of Kufstein. The area is around ten kilometers southwest of the municipality of Kiefersfelden in the district of Traunstein on the Austrian border.
Near the German border: cyclists report bears on the forest road
There had already been a bear sighting in the region in June, and a wildlife camera had recorded the animal at the time. A bear was genetically identified as the attacker when a sheep was killed there shortly afterwards. The state of Tyrol reported this just a few days ago.
Anyone who encounters a bear or is traveling in an area where bears may be present should stay on the trails and make themselves known by talking or singing if they are unsure. As authorities continue to advise, those affected should stop if they encounter a bear and draw the animal’s attention by talking and moving their arms. “Don’t run away and don’t try to approach him. Try not to make threatening gestures and uncontrolled movements. Also, do not throw objects at the bear. Don’t take the bear snapshot, it’s better to withdraw slowly,” advise the Tyrolean authorities.
