In 2019, when the country was divided by the recent presidential elections, a video in which several people could be seen verbally attacking a young man in Medellín was widely resonated.
It happened on January 20 of that year and it was about Alan Garzón Ramírez, who at only 17 years old decided to go to the San Antonio park to demonstrate against “the Duque-Uribe war“, as could be read on the shirt he was wearing.

There he found a group of people, who were marching in rejection of the ELN attack on the Santander General Police School, who did not take his protest well and decided to remove him from the demonstration.
The clip that went viral at the time shows an elderly man wearing a Colombia team shirt yelling at him: “You take off that shirt or we’ll ‘peel’ you! Or learn, or learn. We’re going to take all this crap and we’re going to get it out of the country.“.
In addition, Alan denounced at the time that he was not protected by the authorities, but that members of the Police forced him to leave the march. “I was not afraid to go out because the media said that it was not going to be a march with political overtones. In the end I only saw two people with posters that talked about the deaths of social leaders and that’s it”, Alan said after the incident.
His life changed completely since that fateful January 20. He started receiving death threats. According to a close friend of the young man to the local newspaper ‘El Colombiano’, anonymous hate messages were sent to his social networks and even to his home, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood. The authorities failed again, since they did not pay attention to him and he had to leave Colombia for Germany.

There he settled in the Vinnhorst neighborhood of the city of Hannover, and got a job in a restaurant while studying to be a chef. Also, he managed to prove that he was in danger in his country and thus obtained political asylum. “There they helped him with the asylum, he learned German and English in a year, it was incredible how intelligent he was,” a relative of the young man told the station ‘BluRadio’.
Of course, he missed his land and let his family know: “He sometimes called as bored, especially when winter was about to enter there. That gave him depression. But here we encouraged him by telling him to wait for a cousin to go to be with him.”
his passing
In October he did not communicate with his relatives again. It was a friend of Alan’s who informed the family of his disappearance and the subsequent discovery of his lifeless body. Mushroom pickers found it in the Mecklenheider Forest in Hannover.
The local press indicates that he was last seen by his friends during the night of September 23 north of the city.
He had to go looking for a future and see what he found
Although the German forensic authorities closed the case for “absence of external factors that could have contributed to the death“, an ambiguous expression understood as possible suicide, and they assure that the body found is Alan’s, his family is not sure.
“She (her friend) says that he showed her that he was mentally well. But, when she went to make a statement to the Police and asked that they review the Metro cameras, she did not “stop balls””, said another family member to ‘El Colombiano’.

“We still don’t believe that he took his own life because he was very happy, and he really wanted to leave to help us and to get ahead. He had to go looking for a future and see what he found“, concluded the relatives of the victim.
