Thousands of residents of the Indonesian province of East Java, in Indonsia, have evacuated the vicinity of the Semeru volcano after its eruption on Saturday. Tons of ash have reached the surrounding villages of the Lumajang region, according to the Indonesian portal IdTimes.
The local head of the Indonesian National Agency for Disaster Control, Budi Santosa, confirmed the increase in activity and the launch of the emergency response. “It is recommended to stay away from the area around the river that originates from Mount Semeru,” he warned.
The authorities reported that, for the moment, the eruption has caused one death in one of the towns near the volcano.
