About 300 people carry out a protest march through the city center
Some 300 people participated this Sunday in a march through the city center to demand from the Ministry of Ecological Transition the execution of the Béjar, Torrecilla and Nogalte lamination dams and the channeling of the Biznaga boulevard. The protest coincided with the tenth anniversary of the San Wenceslao flood that on September 28, 2012 caused five deaths and millionaire losses in homes and farms and livestock in Campillo and Torrecilla.
The act of protest comes days after the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) announced the completion of the drafting of the four drafts for protection against flooding in Lorca that include an investment of more than 196 million euros.
The president of the Platform for Affected Persons, Adelina Sánchez, assured that “we need the works carried out, a real solution” because “it does not help us that there is a file in the office of a person who does not know our situation and the fear felt by the neighbors every time the sky threatens with a storm.
Sánchez thanked the Ministry of Ecological Transition for “finally starting to work, but we need the works to be carried out as soon as possible, to be real, not the solution on paper.”
Juan García, another of those affected by the floods, stated that “it is time for them to start doing something so that we are not in our houses in fear. We feel totally powerless, insecure and abandoned.”
Representatives of PSOE, PP, IU, Cs and Vox were present at the demonstration. The mayor, Diego José Mateos, said that “we are trying to include items in the next General State Budgets” to start the execution of the projects for the rolling dams and the channeling of the boulevard and that “we are negotiating the financing” for that these actions be carried out “as soon as possible”.
He added that its execution will be “gradual, prioritizing the Biznaga riverbed and the Béjar dam.”
