This October 1st, Claudia Sheinbaum took oath as president of Mexico, in San Lázaro. With this act, the official beginning of what has been called the “Second Floor of the Fourth Transformation”a new stage in the 4T agenda that seeks to deepen the structural changes in the country.
During her speech, President Sheinbaum reiterated several of the commitments made during her campaign, highlighting one that especially resonated with young people: access to decent and affordable housing for all Mexicans. In this sense, Sheinbaum emphasized his plan of build at least 1 million homes throughout the country, through an ambitious “Popular Housing” program.
The new president’s housing plan is designed to respond to one of the most urgent demands of the new generations: the possibility of accessing their own home. Under this scheme, the government will build affordable housing for sectors that have historically been excluded from traditional credit programs, such as people without social securitywho cannot opt for credits from institutions such as the Infonavit or Fovissste.
Sheinbaum noted that this program will allow young people rent a home with the possibility of purchasing it as long-term property. In this way, an option to access housing will be offered without the need to have a prior mortgage loan, an alternative that seeks to reduce the barriers that prevent many Mexicans from obtaining their own home.
Another of the central axes of the program is the property regularization. In the first stage, a mass deed process will be carried out in the State of Mexico, with the intention of extending this initiative to other entities in the country where necessary. This will allow thousands of families to formalize ownership of their homes.
Additionally, Sheinbaum announced that Your government will grant 400 thousand loans at low cost for the home improvement. These credits will be used to improve the infrastructure of homes, with a special focus on those homes that lack access to basic services such as drinking water, drainage or adequate mobility.
“Historically, there has been a lag in access to water, drainage and decent housing, as well as in mobility. We are going to work to close those gaps. We will ask that the federal and state governments join together to achieve this”Sheinbaum expressed in his speech.
