The saying goes that love has no agebut there is no doubt that when we look for a partner, we usually look for people who are more or less the same age as us.
But now, a study published in Australia has revealed what is the optimal age difference between the components of a couple so that the relationship reaches a successful conclusion.
The study, published in National Library of Medicineconcluded that “couples with a large age difference experienced a faster deterioration of satisfaction in their relationships during the first six to ten years of marriage than couples of similar ages.
In the case of heterosexual couples, the study says that couples with an age difference of between one and three years (in which the man is older than the woman) were the most common and those with the highest level of satisfaction.
“Relationship satisfaction decreased slightly for couples with a difference of age four to six years and continued to decline for couples with an age difference of seven years or more,” the study continues.
In summary, research seems to indicate that in many cultures, an age difference of one to three years is considered ideal, but some researchers suggest that even a relationship with an age difference of less than ten years will bring more satisfaction.
“Still, numbers rarely tell the whole story when it comes to love. It’s possible to be much older or younger than your partner and have exactly the right relationship for you“says the research.
The authors of the study are Wang-Sheng Lee (Deakin University, Australia) and Terra McKinnish (University of Colorado, USA).
