On Tuesday afternoon, that already black day in the history of the Valencian Community and Spain, The rain surprised workers and customers at the Bonaire Shopping Centerlocated on the Eastern Highway, within the limits of Valencia and belonging to the municipality of Aldaya.
As staff from this business complex told ABCthe around 2,000 workers are safe and on the day the flood caught them in their jobs, they managed to go up to the first floor and take shelter, a survival instinct followed by several of the clients who were there at that time, one low influx.
However, what is most worrying is what may be in the center’s underground parkingwhich was completely flooded up to the roof as seen in the photos that many citizens have shared on social networks.
The UME, the Military Emergency Unit, is there, bailing out the water with pumps but still unable to access what is feared could be a terrible scenario of inert souls who perhaps tried to leave the complex and failed.
For now, There is no data or forecast of what the military may encounter once they gain access and not even divers have made incursions into the area yet.
The Bonaire Shopping Center has an area of 254,000 m² (135,000 gross leasable area) spread over three floors and is one of the most popular in the area, with a large restaurant and leisure area and giant stores such as Primark, Zara, H&M and Lefties. Not in vain, it is the leisure and shopping complex largest in the Valencian Community.
Its underground parking, where all eyes are now on waiting to be able to access and inspect the area, has 5,700 parking spaces.
The hope is that that day, due to the adverse weather, there was not a high influx, but it is impossible to determine whether or not the UME will find people once they manage to enter its structure.
Given the size of the shopping center, its parking has different accesses around the complex, where the military troops are now located with the pumps to bail out water and gain access to a space of uncertainty that has been flooded for almost a week.
