The General Directorate of Traffic and the Central Government prepare the Climate Change Law to reduce pollution in Spain
A new measure from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will affect Spanish roads from next year. Your car may no longer be useful before 2023, as some vehicles will not be able to circulate in city centers. The new measure consists of restricting the access of the most polluting cars to the center of cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. The main objective is to pollute much less in a total of 149 Spanish cities. But with this regulation thousands of drivers will also be forced to change cars.
The Central Government defends the Law on Climate Change, the deadline for this regulation to come into force will be at the end of 2022. The goal of the Executive of Spain and the DGT is to improve air quality in large Spanish cities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only about 7 cities in Spain meet the established air quality parameters, something that the Executive wants to improve.
The cars affected by this new measure will be the most polluting. This standard is part of the Shock Plan for Sustainable, Safe and Connected Mobility in urban and metropolitan environments. The main objective of this measure is to offer a better quality of life in the most populated cities.
Alternatives to combustion cars
If you are one of those who will have to change vehicles if you want to enter the city center, you will be interested to know what you will have to do from now on. If your vehicle is one of those that is considered polluting, you will not be able to drive your car through the low emission zones, the most practical thing is to switch to alternatives that are sustainable. For this reason, the Government is evaluating improving the charging infrastructure for electric cars and promoting the acquisition of this type of vehicle.
At the moment, the electric car market is not accessible to the entire population, since prices are usually quite high and there are few charging stations throughout the country. With this measure, the veto of the most polluting cars may boost the sector in Spain, as long as Spaniards invest in buying this type of car.
