Yolanda Díaz has released a new Increase in the minimum interprofessional salary (SMI) of household employees in 2025a salary update that shows the government’s commitment to try to get this group to maintain fair and decent working conditions, in a new advance so that there is greater equity in the work field.
This increase seeks to recognize the great work that these professionals do in homes, contributing in this way that they can enjoy a better quality of life. Keep in mind that in recent years the number of people working as home employees has fallen, from 419,115 of 2018 to 371,918 of 2024, latest known data.
Now the SEPE has decided that the new SMI for the Home employees in Spain it is the same as for any other worker, that is, that they will have A minimum wage of 1,184 euros gross per month in 14 payments or 1,381 euros in 12 payments.
This amount is a remarkable increase with respect to the salary enjoyed, at least, so far, and it is applicable to both full -time and part -time workers. In any case, it must be taken into account that the SMI is the gross monthly amount, so the amount to be received by the employee will be lower, once the corresponding deductions are applied.
The minimum wage is determined per hour worked, so you can calculate the monthly salary of a worker according to their workday. This measure tries to get any home employee, regardless of their workday, can receive a fair remunerationwith which to improve your quality of life.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the new SMI It also involves an increase in labor costs that will be assumed by the employer.
Other measures to improve the working conditions of household employees
The Council of Ministers approved Royal Decree 893/2024, which regulates the protection of security and health in regards to domestic workers and services within the family home, a reform that is mainly dedicated to Improve the working conditions of this group.
Some of the most relevant points of the reform have to do with the right of risk assessment in domestic employment, in addition to the adoption of preventive measures for all those who exercise as household employees who, in addition, will have Right to free training.
These workers may abandon their job in situations of workplace harassment, in addition to interrupting the activity in the event that there is a serious risk for their health. They also have the right to enjoy free medical awards that allow them to equate to the workers of many other groups, in which they are carried out in a mandatory and free way.
In this way we are faced with a reform that is focused on improving a work sector that until recently was none, and in which it is mostly occupied by women. Now, they can have greater equity, reducing the gender wage gap and with a clear commitment to promote equality within a labor market that has not stopped evolving over the years.
