The digitalization of the DNI in Spain today takes a definitive step with the approval of the Royal Decree that will allow citizens to take the identity document on their mobile phone. If you are an forgetful person and tend to leave the ID or directly the wallet at home, you are in luck. This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approves the rule that regulates the issuance of the digital ID, which will grant full validity to the document when it is carried in electronic format, through an application installed on mobile phones.
This initiative, which had been in development for some time, adds to other technological measures designed to expedite identification without the need for the physical document. Although the National Police had already advanced details about this project, it will not be until now when it has legal support and can be applied effectively. Everything will be managed through the app called ‘Mi DNI’, where one can have access to this document and use it whenever it is needed.
However, although it works on the project of the so -called ‘DNI 4.0’ since 2020, the first version arrives with many fringes yet to remedy, and it will not be the same as the physical ID or serve for the same. At least, for now. Next we answer a series of questions posed by the integration of the digital ID:
Does it replace the physical ID?
As sources from the Ministry of Interior have explained, the new document will not replace the physicist, but will allow citizens to identify through a mobile application that will act as their virtual replica
If I stop the police, can I show you the digital ID to identify myself?
Yes, for now this is one of the few uses presented by the digital version of the document, being able to prove before an agent when he requests it. The digital ID will allow to be accredited throughout the national territory. If they ask you at a bar, at a disco, when buying tobacco in a tobacconist …
If I go on a trip, can I use only the digital ID?
At the moment, police sources have indicated to Efe, it will not serve to travel. In that case, one must carry the physical ID as needed.
And can I make the income statement or request a scholarship with the digital ID?
As when traveling, for the moment administrative procedures can not be done through the digital ID. These initial limitations make the difference with respect to the traditional format, although the system is expected to evolve in the future.
Is the ‘My DNI’ application safe?
The application will be connected to the Centralized DNI expedition system, so it is completely safe.
As you can see, the digital ID still leaves many ends without tie and its use does not become the same as the physical ID. Given the doubts that this new identity document provokes, the Director General of the Police, Francisco Pardo, will offer an explanatory briefing to detail all the uses and functionalities of the document.
