The General Directorate of Traffic contemplates several new measures to avoid distractions at the wheel
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) tries to reduce road accidents. For this reason, the new Traffic Law contemplates several new measures to avoid distractions at the wheel. The rule that penalizes those drivers who pick up the mobile phone while driving, one of the most commented measures, is not the only novelty within the new law.
One of the most recent examples has been the sanction of a driver for looking in the rearview mirror as if it were a mirror while driving, according to SocialDrive on his Twitter account. This is added to other measures such as the fine for having your car’s license plate damaged or for not opening the door properly.
In the fine shared by SocialDrive, it can be seen that the driver received a penalty for driving without maintaining his own freedom of movement looking in the rearview mirror, holding the steering wheel with only one hand and the mirror with the other. According to the image that accompanies the tweet, the driver has been sanctioned with a fine of 80 euros.
The DGT has tightened the measures to reduce road accidents. In this case, consider that the person driving the vehicle diverts his attention from the road to the mirror, which reduces his ability to react. The DGT considers this action to be imprudent, as explained in article 16.1 of the General Traffic Regulations.
In the case of this fine, the agent considered that the driver was infringing this rule by “driving the vehicle described without maintaining his own freedom of movement. Looking in the rearview mirror, with one hand on the steering wheel and the other in the rearview mirror. Therefore, be very careful with this everyday action that, in addition to being dangerous on the road, can also lead to a penalty.
