Inflation hits Spain hard these days and its citizens see how the cost of living rises rapidly. In addition, house prices are also becoming increasingly difficult to pay and the same is happening with services, which are rising due to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In this sense, a consultant developed a ranking to find out which are the cheapest cities in the Iberian country to live in, information that can serve as a guide for the Spanish themselves and perhaps also for Colombians who imagine a future in the European nation.
The scheme of the cheapest cities in Spain was made by Kelisto, a company dedicated to comparing prices of companies and services. The index was made, according to the Catalan media ‘La Vanguardia’, according to a balance between salaries and the cost of living of each city analyzedincluding in this last item the prices of transport.

Although the company’s report was made in 2018, even before the pandemic, these days the Spanish media have taken it up again as a way of making the country’s citizens aware of where they can live better in a context of rising inflation and economic uncertainty.
The cheapest cities to live in Spain
According to the aforementioned list, the cheapest city to live in Spain is Palencia, capital of the province of the same name, located in the region of Castilla y León, in the north of the country. According to a breakdown of the report made by the Spanish media ‘As’, the cost of living in that place is 30.06 percent below the country’s average.
In the second place of the index prepared by Kelisto is Melilla, in African territory, with a figure of 17.13 percent below the average; while Lugo, located in Galicia, occupies the third position, with a cost 16.94 percent lower than the average. Logroño (La Rioja) and Teruel (Aragón) complete the quintet of cheapest cities to live in Spain.
Regarding housing, the same study carried out by Kelisto indicates that the city where it is less expensive to buy a home is Ciudad Real, south of Madrid, where the square meter is cheaper than anywhere else in Spain. Ávila, Soria, Lugo and Castellón follow her on the list.

The ranking also compared the price per square meter of rent and the cheapest locality turned out to be Orense, in Galicia, with a price of 5.9 euros per square meter, followed by Ciudad Real, Zamora, Lugo and Cáceres.
The most expensive cities to live in Spain
But just as it was deduced through the report which is the cheapest city, another list was also drawn up that indicates which metropolises in Spain are the most expensive to live in. In this way, according to a study published by another local entity, San Sebastián, the beautiful city located on the Bay of Biscay, in the Basque Country, is the most expensive place to live.

Along the same lines, behind San Sebastián are Barcelona, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Gerona, Albacete, Oviedo and Tarragona. In addition to factors such as housing and public transport, other items such as leisure and wages received by the inhabitants of these cities were taken into account for this list.
In the cases of Madrid and Barcelona, the two most populous cities in Spain, the cost of living is 15.3 percent and 13.6 percent, respectively, higher than the average for cities in the country.
