,,I think everyone sometimes experiences that you think ‘get, the windows are so dirty’”, begins Marja Middeldorp. ,,How do you get it clean without streaks? Let that be one of my hobbies. Sometimes I see people standing on a staircase and then I think: man, this will not work. So a few good tips.”
Supplies
Bucket, lukewarm water, washing up liquid, ammonia, an onion, ladder, tractor.
Onion
I’ll start with that onion. Geez, that’s an old-fashioned tip, people will think. Yes, because it works! Take an onion and cut it into four pieces. You can just leave the skin on. Throw it in the bucket of water and it will, together with the perfect soapy water, ensure that your windows are sparkling clean. What else is needed for that soap? A few drops of dish soap and a dash of ammonia.”
no sponge
,,Then I want to say something about sponges”, continues Marja. ,,Because let’s be honest, who cleans their sponge or chamois after cleaning the windows? I don’t care. I prefer to use a washcloth or another clean cloth. Then you just throw it in the wash. With the washcloth, go over the window twice. Then you know for sure that the dirt comes off properly.”
Tractor
,,Then I have a good tractor. That’s what such a thing is called, isn’t it? Yes. I’ll take a medium tractor. A long one doesn’t work very well because you have to distribute the pressure with your hand anyway. Don’t take the cheapest one, but one with two rubber sides. Then I dry it with a tea towel before the next pull over the window, because that way it will be clean.”
“Well, here’s my secret on how to avoid streaks. If you are inside you draw horizontal stripes and if you are outside vertically. Then you can see exactly where the stripes are: inside or outside. Grab a clean and dry tea towel and you can wipe the streaks away.”
stairs
,,Of course, a staircase is nice. But I position it so that you lean against it with your full body, with your stomach. If something happens, you can hold on for safety. Don’t chamois from the side, because then you could fall off and you’ll be in a cast.”
Then another bonus tip, because Marja doesn’t just work for fun (but mainly for the result). “The inside of the windows don’t get dirty as quickly if you don’t smoke. Lapping is not always necessary, you can also take an old sock and rub it dry. That goes a lot faster and gives an excellent result!”
