The attack of an enraged Peñarol fan was what demolished the iconic statue of soccer player Luis Suárez.
To understand what happened and why the Uruguayans themselves knocked down the tribute, you have to understand a context of rivalries between clubs. Not really surprising.
Luis Suárez is a player who has undoubtedly filled his country with pride during his career. Moreover, the footballer is known as the historical scorer of the Uruguay national team and the champion of Copa América.
However, the affections for the athlete are few, since some Uruguayans do not appreciate him very much, especially Peñarol fans.

Why did they take down the statue?
It turns out that the striker plays for the Club Nacional de Football team of the Uruguayan Professional First Division Championship, one of the biggest rivals of Club Atlético Peñarol. His goals have left several fans deflated and suffering from not seeing their winning team.

During the early hours of this Wednesday, September 28, Peñarol fans gathered to celebrate the 131st anniversary of the institution in Salto, Uruguay. So a group of people moved to the center of the city, where the statue was.
The fans waited until midnight and did not suppress their emotions against the player. They knocked down the statue and broke it at the height of the legs.
Some of the people involved were identified by the security camera and later detained by the authorities.
celebrations of #penarol in jump. Statue of Luis Suarez smashed. They broke windows, police mobiles, 9 detainees. Then they ask why we are the way we are in football. And it happens on all sides. We hurt as a society, we are not going to hurt in football??… pic.twitter.com/UeLgtwp8C7

This statue is not the Luis Suárez of Nacional, it is the Luis Suárez of the Uruguayan national team. He is the historic scorer and is dressed in Uruguay. He is an outstanding salteño.
Leonardo Boruchovas, a local businessman and vice president of the Salto Commercial and Industrial Center, made the complaint.
“We are dismayed by this because this statue is not the Luis Suárez of Nacional, it is the Luis Suárez of the Uruguayan national team. He is the historic scorer and is dressed in Uruguay. He is an outstanding salteño. It is one of the most important non-natural tourist attractions,” he told ‘El País’.

In addition, he added that Alberto Saravia, sculptor of the statue, “going to do everything possible to have it (repaired) before the World Cup“.
And he ended, expressing his sadness against the fact of vandalism and the violence that led to the event.
