On May 30, the UK Government launched a new visa that will be available to students. The visa, called High Potential Individual (HPI for its acronym in English), aims to attract new talent to the European country.
According to the newspaper ‘Firstpost’, the HPI visa is part of the bets of the authorities to make some changes in the UK migration system after the country’s departure from the European Union. In addition, it is a visa that will be issued based on the skills that recent graduates can offer the country.

“The HPI visa is intended to attract an unlimited number of talented graduates in the early stages of their careers who demonstrate exceptional promise.providing a highly desirable and capable pool of mobile talent from which UK employers can recruit,” said the UK head office, as quoted by the Firstpost newspaper.

Who does this new visa cover?
According to the official website of the UK government, to be eligible for this visa the person must have graduated in the last five years from one of the 50 best universities in the world located outside said country.
The 50 universities that appear in the list come from the classifications granted by the QS rankings, Times Higher Education and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
Universities from the United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Switzerland, Germany, among others, are included, and institutions such as Columbia, University of Melbourne, University of Tokyo, Stanford, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, among others, stand out.
The new HPI visa lasts for two years.

What requirements must you meet?
In order to apply, the person must have graduated from an educational institution located outside the UK that has been featured in the list of the best 50 universities in the year in which they graduated from said institution.
Your degree must be at the level of a UK bachelor’s, postgraduate degree or PhD.
Also, you must demonstrate an English level of at least B1: “You must show that you can read, write, speak and understand English to at least B1 level on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)”, explains the Government of the United Kingdom.
Finally, the person must prove that they have enough resources to stay in the country. Thus, he must prove that he has at least 1,270 pounds sterling, that is, more than six million Colombian pesos.
“You will need to have had the money available for at least 28 days in a row. Day 28 must be within 31 days of the visa application”, they point out.

What permissions does the HPI visa grant you?
The new HPI visa lasts for two years. For people who have a doctorate it will last three. You can request it only once and without the possibility of extending the duration.
Once your visa time is up, you can choose to switch to, for example, a work visa.
This visa will allow you to seek employment, work in almost any position within the UK, be self-employed, live in the country with your partner and children (if eligible) and travel outside the UK and then return.

On the contrary, the HPI visa does not allow you to work as a professional athlete in that country or apply for most benefits granted by the State. If you have this visa, you will not be able to apply for residence in the United Kingdom either.
Also, “you can only study on an HPI visa if your course is not eligible for a student visa.”
How can you apply for this visa?
To access this visa, those interested must submit their application online. There you must attach documents such as a valid passport and proof that certifies your knowledge of English.
You must also submit a statement from Ecctis certifying that your degree is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s, postgraduate or doctorate degree. You must certify your identity, which is done through photographs or fingerprints.
Remember that in order to apply, no more than five years must have passed since you obtained your degree.
If you are outside the UK, you will receive a response to your request within three weeks.

How much does it cost to get it?
First of all, you must pay 210 pounds sterling (just over one million Colombian pesos) to obtain an Ecctis certificate. This document is what proves that your title is valid in the UK.
If your certificate is positive and your title is valid in that country, you can proceed to pay for the visa application, which is worth £715, that is, 3.4 million pesos.
You must also pay a surcharge for medical care in that country. You must pay 624 pounds sterling (2.9 million Colombian pesos) for each year you will be in the UK.

You will receive a response on your request within 3 weeks.
This added to the funds you need to prove that you have the resources to live in the country for the time you will be there.
The visa, however, has generated controversy because the list of eligible universities does not include institutions from Africa or Latin America.
