After a cursory TopGear investigation, we have come to the conclusion that the police need faster cars. Even a Chevrolet Corvette C7 should not just disappear. The Texas Police Department clearly agrees with our investigation and is deploying heavy artillery. This Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye is now a police car and has 1,095 horsepower according to the officers.
It Texas Department of Public Safety proudly display the newest addition. The car was seized after the police department launched an investigation into the Challenger’s former owner. He is said to have competed in street races where he hit speeds of over 250 km/h. In addition, he exhibited reckless driving on the streets of Houston.
The story behind the impounded Challenger
The street racer was caught by a police helicopter during a street race. The patrol team was deployed to stop the man, but the Dodge driver then attempted to flee. The police cars managed to shake off the driver, but he was still no match for a helicopter. Although we have also seen that helicopters had a hard time keeping up with a Hellcat.
After a long chase, the Challenger ran out of fuel and the driver continued on foot. Unfortunately he didn’t get very far without a V8 and he was allowed to go to the office. Meanwhile, another loaded pistol for which the man was not licensed was found in the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is now a police car
The Dodge was confiscated and later made available to the state. Subsequently, the car was converted to this police version. He got a black and white livery, flashing lights and a police radio. Although it is not yet completely complete, it is already being used for enforcement and public events.
Incidentally, this could not happen in the Netherlands. The state is only allowed to store, destroy or sell cars that have been confiscated here. Somehow sad.
