A big daily driver for next to a 911. What is the best sporty choice?
We know that there are price differences between the Netherlands and Belgium. And that there are Belgian Autoblog readers (Hello!!!!), we also know that. Finally, that there are Belgian Autoblog readers with very thick cars, that is also known. And yes, those people still have advice every now and then. Rock hard Autoblog Advice. It’s not that they can’t make a choice otherwise, but in some cases it is certainly interesting for them what the choice actually entails.
So we have one today. It is for the Belgian Autoblog reader Douglas he is looking for the perfect fat daily driver. Now we’re all looking for it, of course, but he can spend 90 grand. See, that does change things. In the Netherlands you have an M340i with not too many options and that is the offer. But in Belgium – also just an EU country – you have much more choice!
Current car / previous cars | BMW X7, Golf 8 gti, RS4, 220D coupe |
Buy / lease | does not matter |
Private business | |
Budget | max €90,000 |
Fuel | Petrol or hybrid |
Mileage | 40,000 km |
Reason for buying another car | Petrol car bought at the business for a partner and now also wants to place petrol or hybrid at the business for the fuel costs. |
Preferences | Porsche, Audi or BMW |
no go | Mercedes-Benz |
New? Or used young with options?
The first question to answer is whether you are going for a new one or a used one. Of course, used is more interesting because cheaper. But we can understand very well that you just simply want a new one. Just choose your own color and put together your own equipment.
Of course, you then have some depreciation and you can choose a slightly less thick car. But if 90 grand isn’t enough to buy a new car, how much should you bring? So in this case, we’re looking at new cars, and when budgets get tight (we sometimes go a little overboard), you can track down a young used demo.
Audi RS4 Avant (8W)
€ 91.200
Basically, the Audi RS4 is the answer to all your questions. It is the ideal all-rounder. Especially with the new Competition Plus version, it seems to be an ideal combination of quality, luxury, sportiness, performance and practicality. Especially in a good color it is a great car. Just a little thicker, without being overdone.
If you count all the points, it is definitely a winner, only the Audi is perhaps just a bit too sterile or boring. But given the preference for fat and German, that shouldn’t be a problem, we think. Options are not too bad and the pricing in Belgium is very fair. In principle, the Audi RS4 has everything you need to meet the predicate fat daily.
BMW M3 Saloon (G80)
€87,050
It seems you have to wait for the BMW M3 Touring. That’s the perfect fat daily driver. But it probably won’t fit in the budget. The BMW M3 Touring is only available as a Competition with xDrive and automatic transmission. And despite the fact that they are all top additions, that makes the car less pure. You can get the sedan, or Berline as you can say so beautifully, as a purist version.
The non-Competition, non X-Drive with manual transmission. It still has a ridiculous amount of power with 480 hp, by the way. In terms of price, you are well under 90 mille, although you can not choose very much in terms of options. It is a great toy in this version. Certainly in the long term, it seems to us a good investment. Not in the sense that you will earn money from it, but the depreciation will remain fairly limited. Mind you, in the long term, within 3 years the market is not waiting for an M3 with manual transmission.
Alpina B3 Allrad Touring (G21)
€ 95,000
If you don’t like the nose of the M3 and the RS4 is just a bit too sterile, there is of course an alternative in the form of the Alpina B3 Touring. The idea is simple. A BMW 3 Series with an M3 engine, slightly smaller turbos, slightly more manners, slightly less dynamic capacities and a much nicer nose. The Alpina B3 Touring is a kind of heavenly perfection.
Yes, you can order it in Alpina Green with a gold Dekoset and 20-inch 20-spoke rims, but choose a dark gray one without badges and striping and you can go through life wonderfully anonymously. In Belgium we found one new copy at the Alpina importer. The advantage is also the big disadvantage. Because in the end you drive a potent BMW 3 Series that looks like a BMW 3 Series to the outside world. Which it is, of course. At the Belgian Alpina importer is one!
Porsche Macan S (95B)
€79,483.87
A Panamera or Cayenne just won’t work in the budget. They are a bit too expensive for that. Especially because options at Porsche in Belgium are also very numerous and expensive. You can pick up a four-cylinder Macan for 60 grand, but a six-cylinder with some options can easily fit into the budget (a Macan is not even possible in the Netherlands). It’s still the best driver’s car in its class, but there’s not that much dynamic talent in a crossover class.
The current 95B generation of the Macan is clearly becoming an older model. Now the facelifts have certainly helped and it is still one of the most stable cars you can get, but perhaps you want just a little more for such an amount. They are not really spacious. Now that is not a requirement, but the Macan is very tight for its asking price (and weight). So not really the fat daily that really makes you happy.
Maserati Ghibli Hybrid GT (M157)
€87,950
On the budget, you can afford to drive Maserati. And here too there is a bit of doubt. For 87,950 you have a neat hybrid Ghibli. Nice and sensible. For a little more you have the ‘Modena’ with petrol V6 and four-wheel drive. The hybrid is more sensible, the V6 suits the character of the Ghibli much better.
That V6 really gives the Maserati an exotic edge. And he needs it too, because you can tell by the years. Most of the changes are also real areas for improvement. The problem with Maseratis (and Jaguars) is that they are often more expensive than the German competition, but just not as good. You can call that an ‘exclusive tax’, but it does gnaw a bit.
YOLO: Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (952)
€93,800
Why do a boring German when you can also choose a horny Italian? Yes, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is not the most modern car in its class. But when it comes to a sporty car that can do everything well, then it is a topper, you know. Purely in terms of driving, this Alfa Romeo can still make it quite difficult for the M3. In particular, the control is just a bit more refined and direct. The Alfa loses to infotainment and that kind of frivolities.
Well, how important is that really? The Giulia sounds unique, is really very fast (runs 307 km/h!), still looks cool and has great road holding. Just replaced the factory differential lock with one from OS Giken at our friends at Hardeman Motorsport. Or something similar. In any case, a great sports sedan and a great big daily, even after all these years.
Super Yolo: Jaguar F-Pace SVR (X761)
€110,000
Ok, let’s start with what makes sense. For 90 grand you have a Jaguar F-Pace P400 R-Dynamic SE. That is an excellent combination of power, equipment and appearance. But for 20,000 euros more you have an F-Pace SVR! Yes, those cars cost 110,000 euros in Belgium. So a Macan GTS with some options or one of the coolest engines in one of the coolest crossovers.
The 5.0 supercharged engine is a killer. If you want to write off petrol costs on the business, you can get started with this booze barge. On the other hand, such a supercharged engine is a joy. The rest of the car also cooperates, by the way. Here too you notice that it is not the newest of the newest, but give it a bit of gas and you don’t care anymore.
