Warren Spector is a developer of enormous importance in the history of video games, and among his historical achievements is the fact that he was the key element in the creation of System Shock and Deus Exgames considered today the fundamental basis of the so-called “immersive sim“, therefore if according to him the future of this genre is the multiplayer we must take the statement with some seriousness.
This is an idea with a certain impact, because immersive sims, which are to all intents and purposes a hybrid genre and difficult to classify in a univocal way, nevertheless have as a distinctive element the fact that they are almost always single player experiences.
Yet, in an interview published by Game Developer, Spector reported that he sees the future of this particular type of games in multiplayer action. Of course, this largely comes from the fact that his new project has to do with this game mode.
Thief against thief
Thick as Thieves it is in fact the new title being worked on by Warren Spector's team, and presents itself as a particular multiplayer with stealth elements that offers a “thief against thief” type mechanic, placing the two characters against each other in various situations .
There aren't many details about it yet, but it looks like this Thick as Thieves, in development at OtherSide Entertainmentis somewhat similar to Thief in terms of setting and atmosphere, but is based on a mechanic that involves interaction between players, who can clash with each other or interact.
It is in effect a live service, which will offer both content that can be considered PvE and PvP, with interaction with a dynamic world and also between players within that world. In a certain sense, perhaps we have seen something like this with Deathloop's multiplayer interactions, but in this case the game should be much more based on these.
