In five years, cell phone users in the country will be able to connect via satellite, revealed Eloy Méndez, executive director of Hughes Sales in Mexico.
This means that the phones will be able to link directly to the satellite when the user is outside of terrestrial coverage.
“In the next four or five years we will have direct-to-device satellite communication available for Mexico. “What we want is broadband for phones and smart devices outside coverage areas. We are going to be the owners of the satellite fleet, the technology and the capacity, but for that, the collaboration of the terrestrial cellular operator is required,” the Hughes manager revealed in an interview last week.
This company that provides satellite technology worldwide has already been working on the project for several years, which is why it seeks to ensure that its adoption in cell phones is carried out gradually, with telephone operators that launch their business models for this new service on the market.
“We are in stages. At the end of next year we are going to launch a second phase, of a total of three, where we are going to have communication for IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, direct satellite communication to devices from sensors for economic sectors,” he explained. In recent days, Gustavo Alonso Cabrera Rodríguez, representative of the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency (ALCE), said that the cost of building a satellite that connects the Mexican population is difficult to calculate, given the complexity and technology involved. requires. In the case of the Mexican satellite proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the amount would range from 10 million dollars. “I could tell you that we need to invest what is necessary and we could have an initial capital of 10 million dollars to start building the first stage, which is design and planning and beginning of construction. “In a period of no more than six months we would have very formal things,” Cabrera Rodríguez said in an interview. Jorge Moreno, a specialist in telecommunications issues, considered that satellite connectivity was always an alternative, but there was a lack of a comprehensive digital public policy and not just isolated ideas. “The objective must focus on specifically improving the comprehensive development of people and not just covering the connectivity part,” he said in an interview last Thursday. Hughes Network Systems LLC is a global satellite technology provider company. In the country, in addition to provide residential and business services, it also works with government entities such as the Secretariat of National Defense, Secretariat of Communications, Infrastructure and Transportation, National Guard, among others.
