Paris. Five hundred years of British isolation will collapse in May when France and Britain sign an agreement to build a tunnel under the English Channel. The exciting engineering feat of this century will link the British Isles with mainland Europe for the first time in history. Its promoters predict that it will psychologically close the gap opened five centuries ago, when the English broke relations with the French and set about building an empire in other corners of the world.
Officials said the deal is expected to be signed in Paris next May during an official visit by Queen Elizabeth II, 150 years after the first project for a tunnel under the channel was proposed to Napoleon. The project, which consists of two levels of railway, will link the English coast of Folkestone, with the French, in the vicinity of Calais.
