He Mexico Space Weather Service (SCIESMEX), of the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM, informs about the possibility of effects of one solar storm which can affect Mexico in the next hours or a couple of days.
The above is indicated in a bulletin, where it is added that due to the phenomena of solar activity of the last four daystoday, Friday, May 10, 2024 at 10:40 a.m. CDMX time, the arrival of an interplanetary disturbance (Coronal Mass Ejection) to the surroundings of the Land.
The above subsequently triggered a severe geomagnetic storm that reached level G4 (Kp=8.3 and Dst=-153), is added.
Forecasts indicate that more Coronal Mass Ejections are about to arrive and this geomagnetic storm condition could extend until tomorrow (Saturday), and even become more pronounced.
Disturbances
Coronal Mass Ejections can cause global perturbations of the Earth’s magnetic field that can affect critical technological systems (satellites, telecommunications, global positioning systems, air navigation and electrical energy networks), the statement details.
The instrument network of the National Space Weather Laboratory in Mexico measures space weather conditions in the country and the measurements are reported in real time through SCIESMEX.
“SCIESMEX will monitor the event and provide information to the National Civil Protection System,” it is specified.
Aurora borealis
Due to this event, it is very likely that in parts of the United States and Canada, where it is not normal to see the northern lights, they will be able to enjoy this spectacle.
Also, it is highlighted that it is also possible to observe the northern lights on the horizon, in the north of the states of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Coahuila, in Mexico.
