The Spanish Consumer Association (Asescon) indicated this Saturday that it has received in the last week a “wave” of notices about a new case of fraud that seeks to capture bank data through the simulation of a car accident.
Asescon indicated that “The trap begins when the scammers damage a parked car by hitting the bodywork and leaving a note on the windshield wiper of the damaged vehicle”.
“On that note they apologize for the accident caused and provide a telephone number so that they can contact them in order to report the insurance,” he added.
He stressed that The “deception” begins when you call that phone numberwhile “the alleged culprit assures that he will inform his insurance company at that same moment.”
“Shortly after this conversation, the victim receives a text message from the supposed insurance company indicating that, to start the claim process, it is necessary for the victim to complete some information through a link,” he added.
this link leads to a website designed in which the identity of the insurance company is impersonated and They ask for sensitive bank details through which the fraud is carried out.
“From the Spanish Consumer Association we recommend ignoring this type of messages and avoiding clicking on the link that it would really mean that our device was bugged or that asks us for bank details such as our passwords, etc.”, he stressed, while advising to contact the insurance company.
