The Internet Office warns of a scam through these sales applications
The purchase of second-hand products through applications dedicated especially to it is becoming more and more fashionable. On these platforms you can sell all kinds of products that you no longer use and get money in return. Two of the best-known product trading apps are Vinted and Wallapop. In the case of Vinted, the products that are sold are clothing.
As this form of sale is increasingly used, the Treasury issued a notice to users who use these platforms to warn that certain sales must be declared before the Tax Agency. The Treasury monitors this type of action and acts on those who want to benefit from this type of platform without being held accountable for it. Depending on the money you earn from selling products on platforms like Wallapop or Vinted, you must declare the sales or not.
The scam of Vinted and Wallapop users
It is now known that cybercriminals have targeted these platforms to launch a new method of fraud. An alleged buyer shows interest in acquiring an item and encourages the victim to continue the communication outside the platform, in a WhatsApp-type instant messaging application, they point out from the OSI.
In this way, it states that it has made the payment and provides the seller with a fraudulent link that impersonates the buying and selling platform, indicating to the victim that they must enter their bank details to complete the process. If the victim falls for this scam, the scammers can take advantage of the card information to make charges.
Therefore, the Internet Security Office (OSI) recommends avoiding alleged users who propose to close any sale through an alternative method external to the platform.
Tips to avoid scams on these platforms
– Check if the buyer has recently registered. Fraudulent users have usually been on the platform for a short time.
– Review previous reviews and profile verification.
– If the buyer asks you to continue the communication outside the platform, he or she is suspicious, his or her objective may be to leave no trace in order to carry out the fraud.
– Do not accept payment by any alternative method to the platform.
– Remember that if you have suffered this type of fraud you must report it to the State Security Forces and Bodies. Keep all the evidence to prove the reported facts.
– If you have provided personal and bank details, such as the card number, expiration date or security code, contact your financial institution as soon as possible to inform them of what has happened.
