Ciudad Juarez.- Vaccines help prevent diseases and have a good quality of life. For the upcoming winter season, Dr. Lorenzo Soberanes Maya, medical secretary of the College of Physicians of Ciudad Juárez, recommended getting vaccinated against influenza and receiving the dose of pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPSV23), which prevents any disease caused by pneumococcus bacteria, including pneumonia, a lung infection. From January to July, the Ministry of Health immunized 122,367 people in Ciudad Juárez; of that number, 14,670 were with conjugated pneumococcal vaccine. Another 22,695 were against tetanus and diphtheria, 18,178 hexavalent, 15,980 triple viral (SRP), while 10,373 were biological for double viral (SR) and 7,294 immunizations against rotavirus, and 2,100 antipneumococcal, to mention a few. The medical secretary also recommended the seasonal vaccine for influenza, which is applied from October to April. In the case of girls or boys from six months to 59 months of age, he said that they should be immunized with two doses at a minimum interval of four weeks between each one, and then it is applied once a year. Girls and boys from 5 to 8 years old who have not received two doses of the vaccine receive doses with an interval of one month between each one and then once a year. For those over 9 to 18 years old, one dose is applied annually, whether or not they have received the vaccine before. For people aged 60 and older, he suggested one dose every year, and for those aged 19 to 59 with risk factors, one dose every year, the medical secretary explained. He explained that the contraindications are for babies under six months who have had a history of an egg allergy or a previous dose of influenza vaccine, if they had a fever greater than or equal to 38.5 degrees, and with a history of Guillain Barré Syndrome (a disease that affects the nervous system and causes muscle weakness). It is important to comply with the cycles and the schedule of the vaccination card in children, he indicated. “It is a situation in which our country became a very important factor in the eradication of polio and chickenpox, because these vaccines helped the body develop the necessary defenses to avoid infection, this helped public health for the benefit of the people, the importance is to comply with the cycles and the vaccination card schedule for children,” added Soberanes Maya. A smaller number of 3,200 were immunized against chickenpox, 3,620 against hepatitis A, while 3,963 were immunized against hepatitis B with 20 mcg, and a smaller number of 10 mcg vaccines were applied for hepatitis B, TDPA, HPV and BCG, reported the Ministry of Health.
