The argument of Municipal Board of Potable Water and Sewerage of Mazatlan (jumapam) was that the turbidity of the liquid is due to the “high concentration of clay, organic matter and minerals that the Picachos dam captured in its glass of Water due to the Pamela meteorological phenomenon, which impacted the Sierra de Durango and contributed a large amount of water, causing the runoff of these compounds and raising the color and turbidity beyond the treatment limits of the water treatment plants”.

As a solution measure, the Jumapam specialists implemented actions such as duplicating the coagulation/flocculation system in the dike system before receiving the water at the foot of the plant in order to reduce the excessive turbidity that was reaching the water treatment plant. , with which, they assure, they achieved an improvement in their treatment.

According to figures obtained through a request for access to information, the Jumapam reported through its access to information office that as of January 15 of this year, the paramunicipal had made an investment of 8 million 611 thousand 079 pesos in works to counteract the turbidity of the water.
The resource has been invested mainly in the purchase of chemicals that amounts to 8 million 483 thousand 660 pesos.
It is followed by the acquisition of gasoline for an amount of 45 thousand pesos and electrical material that amounts to 41 thousand 441 pesos and 14 cents. According to the figures, Jumapam also spent on plumbing and hardware the amount of 14 thousand 877 pesos with 87 cents and another purchase under the Miscellaneous line (carp) for an amount of 26 thousand 100 pesos.
This corresponds to 43 days of supply of chemicals in the pretreatment. They estimate that per day, 9 thousand 360 liters of aluminum sulfate and cationic polymer were supplied.
Fit for consumption
To complement the cleaning of the water, the Jumapam implements the filtering system through silica sand, gravel and zeolite filters, using the method of disinfecting the water with chlorine gas.

The paramunicipal clarifies that the physicochemical and bacterological quality are within the maximum permissible limits set by current health standards, except for color and turbidity, but it is considered suitable for human use and consumption.
