Epic Games has not stopped working on its latest engine for video games, the Unreal Engine 5a tool that many developers use for their greatest creations, and that is being seen with games that will arrive in the future such as Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero or some who have already arrived, among them Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga. And now, at a new event they have made it clear that they are still looking forward, with a demonstration that technology enthusiasts enjoyed.
In the recent UnrealFestthe company highlighted several important innovations related to its tool, as well as favorable changes for developers. One of the most notable announcements was the introduction of experimental technology MegaLightswhich allows the creation of dynamic and realistic shadows with advanced lighting effects in volumetric fog. This feature was demonstrated live at PlayStation 5where a scene was shown with more than 1,000 lights casting shadows, which surprised attendees with its real-time rendering capacity.
Besides, Epic Games announced a reduction in royalty rates for developers who release their games on Epic Games Store. Starting January 1, 2025, those who publish their titles on EGS before or at the same time as other platforms will be able to reduce the royalty fee from 5% to 3.5% on revenues over $1 million, which represents a big savings for creators.
The preview version of Unreal Engine 5.5 was also released, with significant improvements to the development tool. Among them, the advances in Nanite rendering stand out, which now allows processing Skeletal Meshes faster, and optimization of Path Tracerwhich has been used in film productions, such as the animated biography of Pharrell Williams.
The event also included discussions on efforts to ensure that high-end games on mobile devices are compatible with EU 5.5underlining the company’s commitment to the continuous improvement of its graphics engine.
