A neighbor delivers the one of the Virgen del Pilar de la Fuente del Caño, after claiming that he had bought it from a person who offered it to him.
The Civil Guard has recovered one of the images stolen from a niche of the Fuente del Caño, located in front of the Plaza Vieja cultural center, while it is still immersed in the investigation of the theft of small carvings that have occurred in recent months in Alhama , after being extracted in different parts of the town. A few weeks ago, as LA VERDAD announced, the last niche visited by friends from outside was, precisely, that source.
The neighbors had denounced a series of acts of vandalism in the previous days, until someone broke the glass of the niche and took the image of the Virgen del Pilar, the same one that was in that place for almost a hundred years.
According to the mayor of Culture, María José López, a neighbor presented himself with the piece, while ensuring that he had bought it from a person who came to his home to offer it, and that it was days later when he found out, through the media, the robbery at the Fuente del Caño. So he decided to take her.
To authenticate that this image was the one that was stolen, the presence of the Virgin’s waitress, Rufina Soria, was necessary, who was the one who assured that it was the original image. Next, the neighbor reported the case to the Civil Guard on the recommendation of Culture. After the complaint, the Benemérita handed over the small image to the mayor, since this is the only municipal niche, while the rest of the town, about ten, are privately owned.
Appointment of the mayor and the parish priest
The mayor, Mariola Guevara, spoke last Tuesday with the parish priest of San Lázaro about that disappearance. They analyzed what happened, as well as the adoption of security measures, highlighting that “although these images do not have a great economic value, they do have an important sentimental value for the residents of those neighborhoods.” Therefore, security has been strengthened. Since last November, three niches had their windows broken and images stolen, that of the Fuente del Caño and that of Santa Isabel, in the La Boquera neighborhood. The next to suffer attacks was that of the Sacred Heart. In this case, in a first attack they could not take the image, since the niche had an armored glass, but they returned after a few days and on that occasion they were able to steal the small carving.
