“We played terribly”
:
Buccaneers and Tom Brady are not gaining momentum offensively
Tampa Bay The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be in good shape in the NFL with two wins and one loss, but they owe it largely to their defense. The attack by superstar Tom Brady has played alarmingly weak so far.
It’s almost a familiar sight by now: When Tom Brady plays with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the New Orleans Saints in the NFL, the frustration of the superstar quarterback is great. The Saints simply don’t suit the old master since he moved to Florida, Brady was only able to win two of six games with his team. In December 2021 there was even a 9-0 defeat – Brady lost a home game for the first time in his career without scoring any points himself. After that bankruptcy, pictures circulated showing Brady angrily throwing a tablet to the ground on the sidelines. It happened again on the second day of the current season.
Well into the third quarter the Buccaneers were oh againne points remained and Brady once again vented his anger on a tablet. In the end Tampa Bay won against New Orleans with 20:10. But Brady was able to thank the strong defensive line, which he did in a video on social media. “The ugly games count too,” he said, “and sorry that I broke the tablet.” With two wins from two games, no matter how difficult they came together, the frustration in the meantime could be smiled away.
The fact that this Buccaneers offensive has problems, however, could not be argued away. Last Sunday there was the first bankruptcy on matchday three: 12:14 against the Green Bay Packers. The only touchdown was only seconds before the end, and the equalization that was still possible afterwards was missed. “It was just poorly executed,” Brady said of the missed two-point conversion, which the Buccaneers made more difficult for themselves with a penalty. “There were a few other moments where we did poorly as well. If you do that, you just don’t get a chance to score.”
The Buccaneers have only managed a single touchdown in each game this season. You’re not going to win a lot of games that way, tight end Cameron Brate noted after the Green Bay game, “How could you not be concerned?” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles also wants the fact that against the Packers some important players were missing: “Talent has nothing to do with how we harmed ourselves.” He also called the offensive appearances “worrying”.
Tampa Bay has big problems with holding the ball, especially in the passing game. Wide receiver drops are not an official NFL statistic because they can be subjective at times. But if you look at the games, you will see some such drops. After the first two weeks, Fox Sports had counted eight alone – the third highest value. It went even further against the Packers: The previously successfully caught leather was dropped twice. Green Bay was able to conquer this now free ball in order to provoke a change of possession. These ball losses hurt especially before especially if, like Sunday, they happen in regions of the field where points are already within reach.
“We played terribly on offense in the first three games,” was Brate’s verdict on Sunday. “The defense made it up to you today. I’m sure they’re frustrated with the offense.” As is Brady, who faces a future penalty if he continues to break tablets, the NFL announced.
However, the game plan does not get any easier. Next Sunday the Buccaneers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the top teams in the NFL. It will certainly take more than a touchdown and a total of 20 points to win here – and with it a significant increase in Tampa Bay’s performance. “There’s still a lot of football to play,” Brady stated. “Nobody feels sorry for us and neither should we. We just have to get to work.”
