The Israeli police said in a statement that they shot dead two Palestinians who fired fireworks and threw stones at the police in the Silwan neighborhood in East Jerusalem.
The Israeli army also announced on Tuesday evening that it had killed “three Palestinians” in an exchange of fire in the city of Ashkelon, located in southern Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip.
The army said in a statement that, “In the past hours, army soldiers, supported by helicopters and drones, exchanged fire with a number of terrorists in the industrial zone in Ashkelon,” noting that combing operations in the area were continuing.
Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht announced on Tuesday that the army had “somewhat regained control of the border” with Gaza, adding, “We know that since last night no one has entered, but infiltration operations could still occur.”
Israel summoned 300,000 reserve soldiers and deployed tens of thousands of soldiers around Gaza, as well as on its northern border with Lebanon, following the sudden and unprecedented attack launched by Hamas on Saturday morning.
