On average, employees in the Netherlands do not receive more than 20 to 25 vacation days per year. Getting the most out of that requires some calculations every year. There are also companies that give their staff unlimited days off. But how ideal is that in practice?
A week of vacation in the spring, a few weeks away in the summer and if all goes well, a few days off around Christmas and New Year. It is quite a puzzle to spread the holidays well over the year. If you play it smartly, you can get more vacation – instinctively: if a national holiday such as Christmas falls on Monday and Tuesday, you only need to use three days of leave for a whole week off.
These are problems that mainly affect people with limited leave days. Although we can’t complain in the Netherlands. Here we have an average of 28 vacation days, including public holidays. This is 11 fewer than in Italy. But in America, for example, they have a total of 16. And this is only if you work full-time. Anyone who works fewer hours per week therefore also has fewer paid vacation days in total.
less stressed
It can also be much easier: some organizations have stopped counting and offer unlimited vacation days. In America, companies like Google and Netflix give their employees unlimited days off, and say they see great benefits. Inexhaustible leave is good for mental health, because people are less stressed and happier. There are also companies in the Netherlands that offer these luxurious employment conditions, such as recruitment agency Target from Zwolle and the company Nerds & Company from Enschede.
