The ship already has protection elements and the experts will analyze the materials to determine their age
The skeleton of a boat ten meters long is the latest finding found in Águilas. Experts in underwater archaeology, together with the municipal archaeologist, Juan de Dios Hernández, will try to determine the age of this wreck, which is found about three meters deep in Levante Bay.
The prospecting work carried out by the Balearic Institute for Maritime Archeology Studies (Ibeam) has made it possible to uncover this vessel. Hernández explains that “Ibeam and the OSS company signed an agreement to carry out studies in the depths of Isla del Fraile. The strong storm of rains and wind, which lasted several weeks, has moved many seabeds from the coast». He adds that “the members of the Estela diving club were doing dives a few days ago and they called me because they found what looked like a boat.”
At that moment, the Ibeam specialists submerged and took different photographs of the boat. They also notified the General Directorate of Historical Heritage to protect this asset. “Wooden frames of a boat about ten meters long can be seen. In the future, the pertinent studies will be carried out to find out the chronology of the wreck. It will be necessary to analyze the types of nails and wood, if in that environment there are ceramics or other types of loads… », says the municipal archaeologist. These underwater archaeological surveys will shed light on the origin of the boat and the time to which it belongs, but for now we will have to wait.
Protected with geotextiles
The wreck is already protected with geotextiles and sandbags, according to municipal sources. “Now, the most important thing is to continue protecting this property and try to analyze all the remains that we find next to it. In addition, we are doing the topography and prospecting of the Bahía del Hornillo, within the project that we started months ago on the Isla del Fraile, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest”, says Hernández.
