The Pass.- Doña Ana County, NM— For the second day in a row, Doña Ana County firefighters continue to battle a massive fire at the Stahmann Farms facility, where a pecan warehouse has been burning since Monday afternoon. The fire, which started around 6 p.m., has affected a warehouse that contained 380,000 pounds (about 172,365 kilos) of pecans.
Despite almost 24 hours of fire, rescue teams have managed to contain the flames inside the original building. However, the situation remains delicate. The concrete roof structure collapsed due to the intense heat, and the temperature has prevented demolition contractors from being able to safely open the walls to spread the burning material.
Fire Chief Shannon Cherry reported that crews are working tirelessly to prevent the fire from reigniting. “We will stay on site as long as necessary, applying water and making sure the area is completely safe,” he said.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the fire continues to produce a considerable amount of smoke, prompting authorities to warn nearby residents, especially those with smoke sensitivity, to avoid the area and stay indoors.
Although the surrounding facilities are not in immediate danger, the Doña Ana County Fire Department will remain on scene until any fire risk is eliminated and safety concerns for contractors working in the area are resolved.
