Since January 24, hundreds of tremors have shaken the Cycling Archipelagoin the middle of Aegean Sea. Without going any further, this morning they have been counted More than 50 earthquakes In the maritime zone between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos, in Greece, already adding more than 600 throughout the region in eleven days.
In response, the authorities have sent emergency teams to the area as a preventive measure, given some tremors that have touched the Magnitude 5 on the Richter scale. In the same way, the closure of the schools of the affected islands, such as Ánafe and iOS, has been ordered.
One for which the most is feared is the Santorini Islandone of Greece’s most demanded tourist destinations. So far, 10,000 people have already been evacuated, among locals, workers and tourists, and many others continue trying to flee.
This Monday there were large jams in the streets that lead to the port and the airport, and a large multitude of people remained until this morning in the port to be able to embark in one of the ships to the Greek capital.
At the moment there have been no material damage, beyond some landslides in the boiler of the island. However, the risk of danger is real.
The precedent of 56
Experts say that the seismic activity of recent days is not linked to Santorini volcanobut at five Underwater failures of the area. Specifically, this phenomenon that shakes the cycled is called seismic swarm and, unlike the earthquakes that happen with a series of aftershocks, in such an event there is no single main earthquake in the sequence.
Although at the moment one cannot know if the situation will go more or will calm down, the natural disaster management professor, Effthimis Lekkasstressed on Tuesday that the frequency of tremors has increased to some extent during the last days and that this phenomenon could last “several more days, maybe even weeks.”
Especially worries that this event reaches the magnitude of the tremors that occurred near Amorgos in 1956when an earthquake was produced from Magnitude 7.3; This, in turn, triggered a 30 -meter tsunami that caused the death of 53 people.
On this occasion, seismographs reveal that this Monday the epicenters of Sisms Sand moved away from Santorini moving a few kilometers east towards the island of amoros, about 2,000 inhabitants and with a rocky floor that decreases the risk.
In his last statement, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Greece has recommended that the civilian population adopt some preventive measures, such as avoiding meetings inside buildings, not approaching abandoned buildings, emptying pools, avoiding routes at risk of landslides.
While no measures have been taken that affect tourism, some countries, such as United Kingdomthey already advise avoiding traveling to areas at risk of farms.
