Health starts the summer campaign against rodent and cockroach pests in the subsoil, which will be applied in the 320,000 meters of sewerage and in public buildings
The entomological surveillance plan of the Department of Health has made it possible to find the first tiger mosquito pups of the year in 70% of the 52 oviposition traps placed in 26 locations in the urban area and in the districts of La Hoya, Almendricos, Campillo, Ramonete, Zarcilla de Ramos, La Paca, La Parroquia and La Escucha. The first positive was detected on May 10 in Ramonete and pups have been located in other points such as the squares of Santo Domingo and Colón, Camino Hondo in Campillo and Almendricos, said the municipal veterinarian, María Dolores Parra. Its appearance is related to the intense rains of the months of April and May and the increase in temperatures.
The tiger mosquito has not made its appearance at the moment in the high districts, since the analyzes of the traps located in La Parroquia, La Paca and Zarcilla de Ramos have been negative. The traps consist of a cylindrical black plastic container in which a wooden slat is inserted and filled with water and rabbit feed to attract the female mosquito to lay eggs. They are placed in the shade, in landscaped areas and no more than a meter and a half high.
The Department of Health recommends, to avoid the proliferation of the tiger mosquito, eliminate objects in which water can accumulate, cover irrigation drums with mosquito nets and frequently change the water in the animal’s drinking fountains.
The City Council has also started, like every early summer, the review of watercourses and more than 320,000 meters of sewage to prevent rodent and cockroach infestations, in addition to the 2,500 manholes that make up the lighting system, the network of traffic lights and municipal green areas, said the Councilor for Health, José Ángel Ponce. It is also carried out in municipal buildings, including nurseries and Early Childhood and Primary education centers, the network of shelters, the 23 medical offices and the premises of neighborhood associations and social centers.
Ponce remarked that “we are at usual levels of incidence” at this time of year in response to the PP, which in recent weeks has emphasized the proliferation of pests due to the accumulation of weeds and garbage and the lack of cleanliness. in different points of the urban helmet and the districts. The councilman criticized the popular, whom he accused of being “determined to sell an apocalyptic vision of the city.”
More than a thousand pigeons a year
The Department of Health not only controls the population of rodents and insects. Each year it captures more than a thousand pigeons through cages in the 11 points installed in the urban area and districts. Many abandoned houses serve as dovecotes, such as the old convent on Calle Lope Gisbert, where two cages have been placed. Other conflictive points are the Plaza Óvalo, Donante de Sangre street, where they stay in a half-finished building, or the Virgen de las Huertas sanctuary.
