An investigation has revealed the presence of 19 substances associated with plastic in tampons and compresseswhich could compromise the health of women and future generations with effects such as reproductive disorders, diabetes or obesity.
These are the results of an analysis carried out by the foundation Rezerowhich promotes a healthy society free of toxic wastealong with the Environmental Diagnostic Institute and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC), after analyzing ten samples of feminine intimate hygiene products from various brands sold in Spain.
The entity demands “prohibit the marketing“of tampons and pads classified as harmful. The objective is to prevent them from continuing on the market waiting for a “strict regulation to avoid toxic substances” in products in direct contact with sensitive areas of the body.
The study, supported by the Department of Equality and Feminism of the Generalitathas detected plasticizers, such as organophosphorus esters, a compound with possible carcinogenic effectsneurotoxicants and endocrine disruptors.
Since tampons and pads are essential items in many people’s lives, the foundation requires political responsibility to implement measures to ensure safer menstrual products and environmentally friendly.
The organization’s proposals consist of banning toxic substances in feminine hygiene devices, as well as an improvement in labeling transparency. Specifically, require a mandatory listing of product components so that consumers can make informed decisions.
In addition, the foundation invites consumers of disposable menstrual products to use reusable ones, such as menstrual cups or cloth pads.
