The Formosa Police detained the councilor and lawyer for several hours Gabriela neme and his pair Celeste Ruiz Diaz, who days ago had denounced Governor Gildo Insfrán for the conditions in the isolation centers for coronavirus patients in that province.
After 7.30 pm – in the middle of cacerolazos at the door of the police station- Ruiz Diaz was released, as confirmed with a video by the national senator of the UCR, Luis Naidenoff. Half an hour later the release of Gabriela Neme.
The arrest of Neme, who is part of dissident Peronism, was first known when participated in a Facebook Live at the door of a school in the provincial capital with other opposition councilors, during a peaceful demonstration. Minutes later the arrest of Ruiz Diaz was confirmed.
Fabian Olivera, a councilor for the UCR of Formosa, was present when the arrests took place at the school gate and gave details of the police operation.
“We were invited by a group of parents from school 18. They came inviting us because there were family members who were quarantined for more than 20 days and still did not have the results of the swabs“Olivera began his story.
He continued: “We came to accompany that group of parents and relatives, who were demonstrating with pots, pans. Five trucks arrived saying that we could not demonstrate. We said no, because we needed to be heard. “
Olivera said that the Formosan police “only said that we could not hold any type of demonstration” and assured that “Gabriela (Neme) is pushed against the wall and cowardly between 6 or 7 police officers stop her and put her in the truck saying we couldn’t be here. “
On Saturday, January 16, Gildo Insfrán had received a complaint about the “Inhuman conditions“of the centers that his province had to isolate patients with covid.
The judicial presentation had been made after knowing a video that recorded the situation in those facilities.
“After these images I have filed a criminal complaint against the governor of the province, Gildo Insfrán, and against the Minister of Government, Jorge Abel González, representative and head of the emergency table, because what these people are experiencing is aberrant“, said that day the lawyer Gabriela Neme, now detained.
The lawyer added on that day in dialogue with Todo Noticias: “Insfrán talks about Peronism, he entered through Peronism But the only thing here is caudillismo, they do what they want, we have no rules“.
Neme spoke that day about the images that were made public at the Preventive Isolation Center of the Cinquantenaire Stadium, the place specified by the councilor.
“There it is prepared as an assistance center for people with positive Covid, but the unfortunate thing is that there are people without positive or negative Covid results,” he questioned.
Widespread repudiation in the opposition
After the news was known, leaders of the opposition came out to demand the immediate freedom of both leaders, including the head of the UCR and former governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejo.
“We demand the immediate release of the councilors @CelesteRuizDiaz and @gabrielaneme detained in the city of Formosa for denouncing the violation of human rights carried out by Governor Gildo Insfrán,” wrote Cornejo.
“THEY TOUCH ONE AND THEY TOUCH EVERYONE The tyranny of Gildo Insfrán has just arbitrarily detained two councilors of the City of Formosa. We are with the entire team of lawyers carrying out the corresponding actions to release them,” wrote the deputy from Formosa Mario Arce.
Also Maximiliano Ferraro, a reference for the Civic Coalition, condemned the arrest of the councilors on his Twitter account.
“In Formosa with Gildo Insfrán at the head there is an authoritarian and dictatorial regime that systematically violates human rights. We demand immediate release of the councilors @CelesteRuizDiaz and @gabrielaneme detained in the city of Formosa,” he said.
