Mexico City.- Comexthe main Mexican paint company, announced this Friday a program to provide social protectionjob security and training for house painters, a trade that almost 20,000 people have abandoned after the covid-19 pandemic.
The company cited that in 2017 there were approximately 200,000 house painters in Mexico, but now only about 181,000 Mexicans practice this trade, according to the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .
The plan consists of the “Safe Painter Insurance” to protect workers, as well as blacksmiths and carpenters, a higher secondary education program, and the launch of a functionality within the Comex App, explained Gilberto Alcaraz, director of the Bonding program. with the offices of Comex.
“In Comex We have created a strategy to promote the development of the nearly 14,000 painters who visit our 5,000 stores on a daily basis. This plan is made up of a series of innovative supports,” Alcaraz said in a statement.
The company, which is part of the US company PPG, stated that in Mexico 47% of house painters work on their own, which makes it difficult to obtain formal coverage or registration with social security.
In addition, 38.7% of the people who practice the trade are married, and 23.9% have a partner.
The average age among male painters is between 35 and 44 years old, while among women it is between 25 and 34 years old.
And the states with the best salaries for house painters are concentrated in the northwest of the country: Baja California, Nayarit and Sinaloa.
Painters are a trade affected by the conditions of the informal economy in Mexico, where about 55% of all workers are in the informal market, according to the inegi.
For this reason, Comex granted in the last year without cost the provision of “Insurance Painter Insurance” to more than 100,000 people, with coverage for accidental death, burial expenses, reimbursement of medical expenses due to accidents, civil liability for damages to third parties and telephone medical assistance.
“These initiatives not only allow us to be close to our clients, but also provide them with free tools that make their work easier,” added Alcaraz.
The company also cited that 27% of house painters only have a high school education level, which is why Comex collaborates with the Universidad del Valle de México to develop a program endorsed by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP).
